Composting

Bettergrows composting process turns organic by-products into high-value organic inputs. Many product streams can be composted and we have the capability to compost a variety of materials across our sites.

We utilise windrow composting which is a popular and efficient method of composting that has been used for many years to convert organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. The materials are blended together in specific ratios and placed in windrows up to 200m long and turned with a windrow turner at the correct intervals.

The windrow composting process is ideal for organic waste materials that are bulky and difficult to manage, such as yard waste, leaves, grass clippings, and agricultural residues. It is a cost-effective method of waste management that is widely used by municipalities, farms, and landscapers.

The length of time required for windrow composting can vary depending on several factors, including the type and quantity of organic waste materials being composted, the temperature and humidity of the environment, and the frequency and quality of turning. Generally, the process can take anywhere from three to six months to complete.

All products are produced in line with AS4454, monitoring temperature, oxygen, and beneficial and non-desirable microbial content. Final testing ensures there are no contamination or quality concerns.

Once the composting process is complete the product is screened and blended to create landscape products, horticulture products, fertilisers and soil amendments, mulches and rehabilitation products. These products have excellent nutrient content, improve water holding capacity, increase and support biological activity and population, increase cation exchange of soil and add significant amounts of carbon.
